FRANCOIS PERON NATIONAL PARK, WA
My favourite activity is taking aerial photographs from a small aircraft or a hot-air balloon, capturing the diversity of the Australian landscape. One such spot is the Francois Peron National Park in the extreme north of the Peron Peninsula. The birrida (an Aboriginal word meaning footsteps of the giant) are small salt lakes that make beautiful aerial landscapes. www.westernaustralia.com.
GETTING AIRBORNE
My choice of plane for aerial photography is a Cessna 180. The windows on both sides open up and give maximum visibility. Most towns of reasonable size have an aero club with a Cessna, but when in the Kimberley I use Golden Eagle Airlines. A hot-air balloon is also an ideal platform; I fly with Windward Adventures in Northam, WA, to photograph the picturesque Avon Valley and the seasonal activities on the land. www.goldeneagleairlines.com; www.windwardballooning.com.
ANDREAS FEININGER
Andreas Feininger has been my inspiration as guide and teacher, and his book The Creative Photographer is one of his best manuals. Famous for his photographs of New York, Feininger's works are in permanent collections in Britain and the US, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
