A confirmation of Summer 08 trends at INTERSELECTION
Interselection is a trade show specialized in last-minute updates for the upcoming seasons. At the last show the five key points for Summer ’08 were presented plus a selection of VIPs (Very Important Products). Two directions were also presented for Winter ‘08/’09: Retro-Nostalgic, a 40s-influenced theme (see Promostyl theme ARCHIVES). Simple-Future, a theme with strict minimalist basics (see Promostyl theme SMART). An Accessories Forum was introduced in the last show. The forum was located in the middle of the Accessories section. It also included a roundtable discussion on the ever-growing importance of accessories and its growth in the men’s market.
Key Points from the Summer ’08 Forum:
1. Living Large
A “loose attitude” which sees big and thinks light. Lots of pleats, darts and blousy tucks are used to accentuate shapes. Pant legs, sleeves and necklines are oversized. Tunics, shirt dresses and XXL sweaters are shown with macro-prints and maxi-graphics.
2. Once Upon a Shirt
A steadfast classic gets an inventive breath of fresh air with new shapes, unexpected details and innovative cuts. New hybrid products are developing throughout the market. To be seen as dresses or one-piece shorts in cotton shirting with stripes, checks, vegetable prints and micro-drawings.
3. Flash dance
Sportswear gets a more feminine touch. Full-on knitwear with a layered look from top to bottom which includes tunics, dresses, leggings and tops. Sportswear is for day or night and graphics are used for both boys and girls.
4. Bling-bling design
Even daywear has a shine. Continuing on from whitened and metallic tones onto more lacquered and satin tones this season. Silhouettes take on a science fiction look.
Leggings and jeans are shown in metallic colors. T-shirts and polos have metallic reflections or threading. As for shoes, sandals are either jeweled or in silver tones.
5. Hippy in the city
A subtle and modern version of the hippy years with a traveler look for the city. Decorative elements are on tunics, tops, dresses and even leggings. T-shirts and sweats are done in fine-gauge jerseys which are fluid and easily draped. They are shown in graded, blurred prints with a floral color range.
In accessories, long 70s style scarves and North-African “cheches” are in the spotlight. Sunglasses are over-sized and the look is finished off, worn with Roman sandals.
